What is the deal with those circles?

You may see someone with circles on their body and wonder what happened. They most likely received a massage cupping session.

Cupping is a form of traditional medicine that originated in China. Cupping is used to draw blood away from tense areas of muscle tissue, break up adhesions (tight muscles), release muscle tension, and increase blood flow. It can be used in conjunction with other forms of massage. Cupping gained popularity in the US when olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was sporting red circles on his back in the 2016 summer Olympics.

There are different types of cups and methods of use. I have attached a link below for your reference.

In my practice I use silicone cups. They are placed on the skin to create “suction” on the targeted muscle. The cups may be left in one place or moved around the body in a “gliding” fashion. Stretches involving muscle groups may also be performed while the cups are on the client for added release of muscle tissue.

I recommend cupping to clients who may be having difficutly with mobility due to tight muscles, clients who may not be able to handle the intesity of a Deep Tissue massage or clients that want to try something new.

Cupping can leave marks or "cup kisses" on the body. 'Cup kisses' can occur anywhere on the body but the most common areas for this to occur are the shoulders, back, and pectoral area. The marks usually go away in 7-10 days.
